DUMBBELL SHRUGS

Dumbbell Shrugs

Alternate Name: -
START POSITION EXECUTION
Grab a pair of dumbbells and stand up straight and let them hang down at your sides. Get ready for the initial shrug. This is your starting position. Shrug the dumbbells up using your traps and focus on getting a good "squeeze" at the top of the movement. Then, release the weight back down to the starting position.

Finally, repeat the entire movement for the desired or prescribed number of repetitions.

DO DON'T
  • Perform this exercise in a smooth and fluid motion
  • Keep your arms straight at all times
  • Don't jerk the dumbbells up nor release them too fast as this may result in injury
SPECIAL NOTES & LEVEL of DIFFICULTY VARIATIONS
To increase the level of difficulty, slow down the movement or use heavier dumbbells.

An all time classic exercise for the shoulders, this exercise is also good for the traps and neck muscles as well. The important thing to highlight is that doing this exercise too fast is not the way to go. If you go too fast you risk pulling a neck muscle or injuring your shoulder(s). Thus, proper pace is the key to executing this movement.

If you are a beginner you can still do this exercise but with lighter dumbbells. After several weeks you can start bumping the weight up slowly to challenge yourself more and keep your muscles primed for growth.
