Losing lean muscle is the last thing you would want to do. It makes you look unhealthy, and even worse, it lowers your metabolism, which in effect immediately stops your fat loss plan dead in its tracks! Once your metabolism starts to drop, you will find it next to impossible to lose any body fat at all. But, the pure fact of the matter is that direct ab exercises should only be a small portion of your workouts. The majority of your time should be spent on focusing on multi-joint exercises that work the major muscle groups of the body like the legs, chest and back, while at the same time working the abdominals secondarily as a stabilizer.

When you focus your attention to the major muscle groups, you stimulate your metabolic rate both during and after your workouts. In addition, you'll also increase the level of fat-burning hormones inside your body. All in all, you simply can’t get this type of metabolic and hormonal response by doing endless sets of crunches.

Therefore, if you really want to lose belly fat fast, do some barbell squats, dumbbell lunges, step-ups, rows, pulls and a variety of presses and dead lifting movements.

Also remember to perform each workout at a high intensity level. This means no 5-minute rest periods between sets to chat with your friends or try to make new ones at the water fountain! Always keep in mind that exercise to lose belly fat for good requires some intensity, so you need to be completely focused on "business" when you are training!
