Progressively increasing the weights you lift or increasing the number of repetitions you perform every week is the most important factor for accelerating muscular growth.
Let me repeat this again - the only way you can accelerate your muscle growth is by systematically and continuously increasing the intensity of your bodybuilding workout routine.
Why? Because physical stress and changes in the body’s environment force muscles to grow. If the environment doesn’t change and is always the same, you’re body won’t change either, because it doesn’t need to adapt. It’s as simple as that.
Let me illustrate what I mean, picture yourself performing seven reps of barbell squats with a 200 pound load. If you continue doing the same thing for three months, you won’t see any significant muscle growth.

Only when you focus on strength gain during every exercise, will you see an increase in your muscle size.

The most important strategy of bodybuilding workout routines is to focus on small and gradual increases in the amount of weight lifted and the number of repetitions performed. Your muscles will get stronger and larger if you do this. Remeber, your body has no reason to grow bigger muscles if you don’t challenge it. Only when you progressively overload your muscles will you be able to get sizeable muscle growth.
Also, I would recommend maintaining a training diary (click here for training log workout logs) which is the most effective way to actualise (and visualize) a progressive strategy into your workout routine. Every time you workout write the details about the exercise, the weight and reps your did for each set.
When you exactly know what you did in a previous workout session, you can make small improvements in the next session. It's also a good idea to use your workout log diary to keep track of your goals. Writing down your goals will make you take responsibility for meeting them.
These records also motivate you because they help you track your progress. An increase of five pounds this week may not seem very significant, but when you consider several months of progress, you’ll find this increase in weight and repetitions amazing.
